Hopkins was a two-time first team NAIA All-American and was Grambling St.'s first consensus All-American.  He was also a four-time All-Midwest Athletic Association selection.  He finished his career as the most prolific scorer in small college basketball history.  At the end of his career, he held these NCAA and NAIA small college career records: most points scored (3,759); highest scoring average (29.8); most field goals attempted (3,309); most field goals made (1,403); most free throws attempted (1,292); most free throws made (953); and most rebounds (2,191).  He averaged 17.4 rebounds for his career.  He averaged 30.9 points in 1956 (2nd in nation), 32.4 points in 1955 (3rd in nation), 27.8 points in 1954 (9th in nation), and 28.5 points in 1953 (4th in nation).

 

Hopkins was selected in the 10th round of the 1956 NBA Draft (75th overall pick) and went on to play four seasons in the NBA.  He later coached in the NBA, including a brief stint as the head coach of the Seattle SuperSonics in 1977.  He is also a member of the NAIA Hall of Fame, the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame, the Small College Basketball Hall of Fame and the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame.
